The Shuōwén Seal form of 第 dì ‘order/sequence’ is said to combine 竹 (zhú) ‘bamboo’, and 弟 dì ‘successive turns of string wound on a spool’ (abbrev. phonetic).
Note: The 弟(𠂖) component (missing 丷 above) is abbreviated to a shape like 𢎨(𢎣) diào ‘mourn/console’; the 竹 component might relate to 竹简 zhújiǎn ‘bamboo strips’ written on in ancient 第 ‘imperial examinations’, as in 等 déng (等第 ‘rank/grade’).
Note: 弟 writes 第 in the SW entry for 弟, but DYC added an entry for 第 to his edition based on an old citation of SW.
