(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 经:) The Shuōwén Seal form of 经/經() jīng ‘warp (of a loom)’ combines 纟/糸 (sī) ‘silk/thread’, and 𢀖/巠() jīng ‘(liquid/thread) channel’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 巠, cf. 𢀖.
Note: The component 𢀖/巠() is sometimes said to be an old wr. of 经/經() jīng ‘warp (threads); channel/through; blood vessels’, depicting warp threads on a loom (forming the channel through which the weft passes).
Note: The received SW gloss 織 is emended to 織從絲 (DYC), with 從/縱 specifying nominal 經 jīng (n.) ‘warp (of a loom)’, vs. verbal 經 jìng (v.) ‘weave (string the warp)’ (HDZ).
Compare: 纬/緯() wěi ‘weft/woof (of a loom)’; 织/織() zhī ‘weave (textiles/fabric)’; 缋/繢(𦇣) huì ‘thrums (warp head/tail threads)’.
Compare: 综/綜() zèng/zòng ‘heddle (of a loom)’; 杼柚 zhùzhóu ‘(shuttle and reed of a) loom (in weaving)’.
Note: In weaving, the “vertical” warp threads are strung out in parallel on the loom, stretched tight (like the strings of a guitar), and alternately warped by the heddle (alternate warp threads are raised/lowered creating the warp shed channel/passage), through which the shuttle carries/weaves the “horizontal” weft threads (cf. 纬), to be set in place by the reed/beater.
Compare: 经过, 经历 ‘pass through (a channel/way/etc.); undergo’; 经常 ‘constant’; 经典 ‘classics’.
Compare: 《诗经》, 《易经》, 《道德经》 (names of important classical texts, classics).
Compare: 经/經 jīng ‘longitude’ (vertical); 纬/緯 wěi ‘latitude’ (horizontal).
Compare: 胫/脛() jìng ‘shin’; 茎/莖() jīng ‘stem/stalk’; 径/徑() jìng ‘footpath’.
