The Shuōwén Seal form of 鼠(􁬫) shǔ ‘rodent/mouse/rat’ is said to derive from old pictographs depicting the animal, with its head/mouth/teeth wr. like 臼(􁍴) jiù ‘mortar’ (for grinding, i.e. gnawing), its feet/claws wr. rather like 比(􁙢) as in other animal graphs such as 鹿(􁪢), 能(􁭂) or 鳥(􀨤), and a line on the right for the back/tail.
