The Shuōwén Seal form of 见/見 jiàn ‘see’ combines 目 mù ‘eye/vision’, and 儿 rén ‘person’ (人): a person uses his eyes/vision (in order to see).
    Note: Formerly distinguished as 视/視 shì ‘vision/sight’, vs. 见/見 jiàn ‘see’; one can have 视 ‘vision’, but still not 见 ‘see’, as one can have 听/聽 tīng ‘hearing’, but still not 闻/聞 wén ‘manage to hear/understand (recognize sounds)’, or as one can eat, but still not recognize the taste/flavor (cf. 聞); but later such distinctions were confused/lost (DYC); cf. 聞.
    In the simple form 见, the full-form component 目 is reduced to its first two strokes (like 冂), and the first stroke of 儿 is lengthened; this is an old 草书 abbrev., seen in 4th c. A.D. (王羲之).
    Note: 现/現 xiàn ‘appear’ was formerly wr. 見, and 现/见 xiàn spelling variation is still seen in lit. usage; cf. 见.
    Compare: 艮(𥃩) gèn ‘turn/look back’.
    见/見 is the 147th of the 214 radicals.
