Shuōwén offers a few competing explanations of the seal form, suggesting first that it depicts a lizard (蜥蜴), maybe a gecko (蝘蜓, 守宮); others infer from that that it is a chameleon (which changes color easily?); or, in conjunction with the name of the classic 《易经》 Book of Changes, it is also associated with the sun/moon, and with light rays (shining through/dispersing clouds), cf. 昜 (陽阳) yáng. But the oldest forms of 易 look nothing like a lizard, and seem to bear little resemblance to the sun and moon. Instead they are thought to depict a vessel, perhaps like 益 yì (䷩) overflowing with water or food. Or the three lines represent ☰ (⚊⚌☰𝌆䷀陽/乾), or 蓍草 ‘yarrow stalks’ stored in or falling from a divination vessel 皿/鼎 (䷱).
