The Shuōwén Seal form of 音 yīn ‘articulated/musical sound/tone’ combines 言 yán ‘direct speech’, with an extra 一 line inside 口(𠙵) kǒu ‘mouth/voice’, indicating that in articulate speech or tuneful music, the mouth/voice produces one (segmented/segmental) speech sound or musical pitch/note at a time.
In the modern form 音, the top part 䇂 qiān ‘offend’ (as in 言), is abbrev. (omitting the 丨 vertical stroke) to a shape like 立.
