One monosyllabic entry in The ABC Chinese-English Comprehensive Dictionary (namespace Ci):
►²jī 鸡[雞] {A} n. ①chicken ②〈environment:〉 slang prostitute M: ²zhī 只
The simple-form character 鸡 (7 strokes) is an abbrev. of an old variant 鷄 (21 strokes) of the full-form character 雞 (18 strokes), replacing the full-form component 奚 (10 strokes) with simply 又 (2 strokes), and simplifying the old right-side part 鳥 (11 strokes) to 鸟 (5 strokes).
Note: The simple-form component 又 replaces various different complex full-form components, as in 对/對, 观/觀, 难/難; cf. 又.
The full-form character 雞 (18 strokes) is itself an old variant of 鷄 (21 strokes), with 隹 (zhuī) ‘short-tailed bird’ (8 strokes) instead of 鳥 (niǎo) ‘long-tailed bird’ (11 strokes).
Note: 鳮 (13 strokes) is an old intermediary abbrev. form: 鸡 ← 鳮 ← 鷄.
Note: In the simple form 鸡, the left side is abbrev. to a shape like 又 (yòu), not a traditional component of 鸡/雞; 又 also replaces 𦰩, cf. 难/難(𩁘), 汉/漢(𤁉).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 雞 jī ‘chicken/rooster’ combines 隹 zhuī ‘short-tailed bird’, and 奚 xī (phonosemantic); the farm animal/bird which knows what time it is, announcing the dawn; formerly wr. 鷄, and later 鳮/鸡.
Compare: 奚 xī ‘(tethered) fat-bellied (piglet); what/how (what time is it?)’.
Note: Hens might also crow, if there is no rooster in the flock.
Compare: 鹦/鸚 yīng ‘(talking) parrot’ (the bird which knows how to speak simply, like a baby).
Compare: 雞 jī ← MC /ki/; 雉(𨿘) zhì ‘pheasant’ ← MC /ɖieiʔ/ (SBGY).
