A 泉 (quán) spring gushing out from a 厂 cliff, the origin of the water. Now 源 yuán with an added 氵(水 shuǐ ‘water’) means ‘origin’, and 原 means ‘originally’. In 原, the bottom of 泉 quán has become abbreviated from 水 to 小 (xiǎo ‘small’).
