Originally written 㠯, the same as 已 yǐ ‘already’.
    “This very ancient character is supposed to represent the exhalation of the breath, the virtue that emanates from any object, its action, its use. By extension, use till exhaustion, to terminate...” —Wieger.
    The old form of 以 is 㠯, also written 已; the reduced form 厶 is seen in some compounds (台牟); the distorted form 以 has 𠄌 on the left plus 丶, and for the meaning “use as, consider as”, 人 rén ‘person’ on the right (compare 佀似, with 人亻 on the left).
    以 yǐ is said to be the phonetic in 似 sì, but not in the Simple form 拟(F擬) nǐ.
