The Shuōwén Seal form of 说/說 shuō ‘narrate/expound’ (formerly also 兌/悦 yuè ‘happy/joyful’) combines 言 yán ‘direct speech’, and 兌 duì/yuè ‘happy/joyful’ (phonosemantic): joyfully tell a happy tale, offer an interesting analysis.
Compare: 阅/閱 yuè ‘go through (inventory/count; experience)’, in which 说/說 (abbrev. phonetic), or else just 兑/兌 (phonetic).
Compare: 兑/兌 duì/yuè ‘happy/joyful’, which is said to be an old wr. of 说/悦 yuè ‘happy/joyful’ (cf. 兌, 㕣, ☱); cf. 憙(喜).
In the modern simple form 说, the full-form component 言 becomes 讠, and 兌 (ears-in) becomes 兑 (ears-out).
Note: Some say that in 兑 the component represents 丷(八) ‘cries/songs/words of joy’ coming from the 口 ‘mouth’ of a 儿 ‘person’, and hence 说 ‘to speak’.
Note: Unicode encodes three forms: 说 (PRC simple), 說 (ROC full); 説 (HDC/PRC full); 說/説 (at least) would have been unified, but for Source Separation.
Note: Wenlin treats 說 (with 兌) as the standard (ROC) full form, though 説 (with 兑) is preferred in PRC publications (HDZ, HDC).
