The Shuōwén Seal form of 一 yī ‘one’, a single horizontal stroke symbolizing the number 1, is said to be the number of tiān ‘heaven’: the top stroke of is 一, marking the top of the head, the sky overhead.
Note: As a component in other characters 一 is sometimes short for (𠄞) ‘up/high/sky’, or else it indicates the flat surface of the ‘earth/ground/horizon’, as in zhì ‘arrive’.
Compare: tiān ‘heaven’ (⚊, ☰䷀), (𢂇) dì ‘god/king’, bù ‘not’.
Compare: zhì ‘arrive’, 𢀖(𤔊) jīng ‘groundwater’, tǔ ‘earth’, èr ‘two’ (the number of ‘earth’).
Note: The tone (yī, yí, or yì) depends on the following syllable; by itself, or at the end of a phrase, 一 is pronounced yī (first tone); before a fourth-tone syllable, 一 is pronounced yí (second tone, as in 一 yị̄dìng → yídìng); before any other syllable, 一 is pronounced yì (fourth tone, as in 一 yī̠xiē → yìxiē); often these tone changes are not indicated in pinyin, and the syllable is wr. with the first tone: yī; thus, a dictionary may have “yīdìng” (or “yị̄dìng”) and “yīxiē” (or “yī̠xiē”), but these should be pronounced yídìng and yìxiē; some dictionaries mark such tone changes using tone sandhi notation: “yị̄dìng” or “yī̠xiē”; for another “tone sandhi” rule, see bù.
Note: As a stroke type, a horizontal stroke 一 is called héng ().
一 yī is the first of the 214 radicals.
