(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 诉:) The Shuōwén Seal form of 诉/訴(𧩯) sù ‘tell/accuse’ combines 讠/言 (yán) ‘direct speech’, and 斥(㡿) chì ‘blame/denounce’ (phonosemantic); formerly also wr. 𧪜(), 愬(), with 朔() shuò (phonetic).
Note: In the modern forms 诉/訴 the component 斥 seems to add a stroke to 斤() jīn ‘axe’, but 斤 is not a trad. component of 斥, which is really an abbrev. of old 㡿() chì.
Note: The components 㡿 and 朔 were once closer in pronunciation to sù; both had a fricative in the initial, and something like an “-ak” final; (cf. GSR).
