The simple-form character 确 (12 strokes) is an old form, re-used as an abbrev. of the (younger) full-form character (15 strokes), replacing the full-form component (10 strokes) with (7 strokes).
The full-form character què ‘hard/solid’, with (shí) ‘stone’ and hè/què (phonetic), is a more recent development (not in SW); the form arose to signify more abstract senses formerly wr. 确, and also , .
The Shuōwén Seal form of 确 què ‘rocky/hard/poor soil; hard/poor’ combines (shí) ‘stone’ (rocky/hard), and (𧢲) jiǎo/jué ‘horn’ (phonosemantic); formerly also wr. 𥔼 with 㱿 què ‘hard shell’ (phonosemantic).
    Compare: () què ‘honest/circumspect’, later wr. 确/ què ‘true/correct’.
Compare: 确/ jué, juézhú ‘butt heads/horns; compete’ (cf. ).
    Compare: , , .
