From ​(​ rén) ‘person’ and ​ shí ‘ten’.
    In the word 什​ shénme, 什 is pronounced shén. Among full form characters ​ is sometimes used instead (​ shénme or 什​ shénme), but among simple form characters ​ is always pronounced shèn.
    什 shí is the same word as ​ ‘ten’, and also means ‘assorted, mixed’, as in ​什​ sùshíjǐn ‘mixed vegetables’ (compare ​ shí which is used for ​ shí on cheques).
