From ​ (shí) ‘stone’ and ​(​) qiān phonetic. The right side is now written like ​ kāi ‘open’, but it was a originally a character ​ qiān ‘level’, composed of ​ (gān) doubled. ​ is obsolete. In 研 yán the horizontal strokes were joined to look like ​ kāi. The lower part of ​ bìng has the same origin.
