From ​(​ ròu) ‘flesh’, ​ (quǎn) ‘dog’, and ​(​ huǒ) ‘fire’.
    “To ​ roast ​ dog’s ​ meat” —Karlgren.
    Now the character ​, with an extra ​, is used for the meaning ‘burn, roast’ (​ ránshāo). The original 然 has been borrowed for rán ‘so, thus, like that, correct’.
    Compare ​ zhì ‘roast’.
