From (肉 ròu) ‘flesh’, 犬 (quǎn) ‘dog’, and 灬(火 huǒ) ‘fire’.
“To 火 roast 犬 dog’s 肉 meat” —Karlgren.
Now the character 燃, with an extra 火, is used for the meaning ‘burn, roast’ (燃烧 ránshāo). The original 然 has been borrowed for rán ‘so, thus, like that, correct’.
Compare 炙 zhì ‘roast’.
