The full form 類 lèi ‘kind/type’ combines 犬 quǎn ‘dog’ (as in 状 ‘shape’), and 頪 lèi ‘similar’ (phonosemantic); cf. 頪 lèi ‘similar’ , which is an old wr. of 類.
The simple form 类 (9 strokes) abbreviates the full form 類 (19 strokes) to 米 over 大 (omitting 頁, and changing 犬 to 大).
Compare: 颣/纇 lèi ‘knot (in silk)’ (difficult to untangle), in which 糸 instead of 犬.
