(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 儿:) The simple-form character 儿 is an abbrev. of the full form 兒, omitting the top component 臼; the two forms 儿/兒 are traditionally distinct, 儿 being the bottom part of 兒; cf. 兒(𠒆).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 儿() rén ‘person’ is a variant wr. of 人() rén ‘person’, used as the bottom ‘two legs’ of many characters (and hence it is curved/bent, under the weight).
