The top 𦥯 shows two hands around 爻 (yáo) lines in the symbols of the 《易经》 Yì Jīng Book of Changes, over 冖 something like a cover. One uncovers the truth by grasping the 爻 changes. 子 () ‘child’ was added to the bottom since children are good at learning.

The simple-form character 学 (8 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 學 (16 strokes), replacing the upper full-form part 𦥯 (13 strokes) with ⿱⺍冖 (5 strokes).
The simple form 学, in which the top is three dots, is at least as old as the fourth century A.D. Distinguish it from 字 zì which has only one dot on top. Compare () jué ‘feel’ and 教 jiāo jiào ‘teach’.

The Shuōwén Seal form of /學(􀣢) xué ‘study/learn’ is said to be an old abbrev. of 𢽾/斅(􀣡) xiào/xué ‘teach/learn’ (cf. 觉/覺 awaken), in which the components are 教(􀣞敎) jiāo/jiào ‘teach’, 冖(􁒧𠘨) mì ‘cover/darkness/ignorance’ (as in 蒙), and 𦥑(􀝵) jú/jǔ ‘respectful/dispensing/uplifting hands’ (phonosemantic); in old texts 教 and 学/學 were not clearly distinguished.
