The simple-form character 开 (4 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 開 (12 strokes), keeping the inner part 开, but omitting the rest 門 (8 strokes).
Note: In the simple form 开, the full-form component 門 ‘door’ is completely omitted (it is wide open); in the non-standard simple-form variant 𫔭 the full-form component 門 is simplified to 门 instead of simply omitted (as might have been expected).
The full-form character 開 is itself an abbrev. of older forms, replacing the old component 幵 (6 strokes) with 开 (4 strokes).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 開 kāi ‘to open doors’ combines 門 (mén) ‘double doors’, and 开(幵) qiān ‘level/balanced’ (phonetic); formerly also wr. 𨵑, in which the inner part was not 开(幵) qiān, but 廾 ‘upraised/respectful hands’ lifting the 一 bolt from the 門 ‘door’.
Compare: 開/岍 qiān (a mountain pass), formerly wr. 幵 (DYC).
Compare: 开(幵) qiān ‘level/balanced’; 并(𢆙幷) bìng ‘combine’.
Compare: 闩/閂 shuān ‘door bolt/latch’ (拴/栓/𢩠/𣟴); 𨳏(𨳌).
Compare: 闿/闓 kǎi ‘to open doors’, syn. 開 kāi (SW).
Compare: 闢 pì ‘open’, formerly wr. 𨳟(𨴔) with 𡴂 pān, not 𠬞.
