The Shuōwén Seal form of 即(卽) jí ‘to have a good meal just before leaving on a trip’ is said to combine 㿝(皀) jí ‘fragrant rice’, and 卩(𢎛卪) jié (phonosemantic); 卩 here suggests dispensing food (cf. 巽/饌 ☴䷸), and accepting it in moderation (节 ䷻).

Older graphs associated with 即 are thought to depict 卩/人 a person facing/eating the food, but just about to finish/leave (at once), and hence usages such as ‘at once, immediately’; later, the shape 卩 was re-interpreted as 卪 jié (phonosemantic), as in 节 ‘limit’; in old graphs the lower part may have depicted a pot or spoonful of food (cf. 匕), or the base of the food vessel (cf. 㿝, 豆).
