The Shuōwén Seal form of 简/(𥳑) jiǎn ‘bamboo strips/slips (writing medium)’ (: 简; , ) combines (zhú) ‘bamboo’, and /() jiān ‘between’ (phonosemantic): strips of split bamboo bound together, with string/space between; cf. /(𠕋) cè ‘bundle/book’ ().
    Note: 简 jiǎn ‘bamboo strips/slips’ (简); ‘book/writing’; ‘(select/polished/concise/short/brief) passage/letter/note (fitting on a single bamboo strip)’ (cf. jiǎn ‘note/card’); ‘short/simple’ (简); the meanings 简 jiǎn ‘select/concise’ were formerly wr. jiǎn, cf. /.
Note: Writings on single/bound bamboo strips were called jiǎn; multiple strips/bundles tied/bound together (with silk or leather) made a cè ‘bundle/book’, properly wr. /(𠕋); strips tied with leather were called wéibiān, and strips tied with silk were called sībiān (cf. “The Chinese Book: Its Evolution and Development”, ).
Note: Formerly wr. 𥳑, with , later wr. , with (in which , not ); the modern meaning is mainly 简/ jiǎn ‘simple’, replacing the old meaning 简/(𥳑) jiǎn ‘bamboo strips/slips’ except in historical contexts.
