(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 兴:) The simple-form character 兴 (6 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 興 (16 strokes), replacing the full-form component (13 strokes) with ⺍ (3 strokes).
Note: In the simple form 兴, the complex top parts of the full form 興 are abbrev. to just 3 strokes (leaving sth. like ⺍/小 over 丌), as in 举/舉 jǔ (see below).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 兴/興(𢍯) xīng ‘rise/raise up; be aroused’ combines 舁(𦥠) yú ‘(two people) raise/lift up’, and 同() tóng ‘together’ (as in 同力 ‘cooperate’): when people cooperate in doing sth. difficult, in lifting up sth. heavy (as a sacrificial bronze vessel/offering), in working together toward accomplishing a common goal/success, there is a joyous shared result (同事功; 共同出力).
Note: The character 興 is also assoc. with anc. 釁() xìn ‘blood sacrifice/offering’ (HDZ), cf. 衅/釁.
