From 竹 (zhú) ‘bamboo’ and 间(間) jiān phonetic.
Originally 简 jiǎn meant 竹简 ‘bamboo strips/slips (for writing)’. Later it meant a brief letter or note (etymologically the same word as 柬 jiǎn). Now it means short and simple.
Writings on single bamboo strips were called 簡 jiǎn; multiple strips tied/bound together (with silk or leather) made a 策 cè ‘bundle/book’, properly written 册/冊(𠕋); strips tied with leather were called 韦编 wéibiān, and strips tied with silk were called 丝编 sībiān (cf. “The Chinese Book: Its Evolution and Development”, 吳光清).
