(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 盖:) The simple-form character 盖 (11 strokes) is an old abbrev. of the full-form character 蓋 (13 strokes), replacing the top full-form part 䒧 (8 strokes) with the shape 𦍌 (6 strokes).
Note: In the simple form 盖, the top part looks like 𦍌/羊 yáng ‘sheep’; in the full form 蓋, the top part looks 䒧 (not a trad. component of the full form 蓋).
The full-form character 蓋(⿱艹盍), formerly wr. 葢(⿱艹盇), adds the upper component 艹 (cǎo) ‘grass’ in order to specify 蓋 gài ‘thatch’ from old 盍/盇(⿱大血) hé/gài ‘cover/thatch’.
