The Shuōwén Seal form of 玉(􀁢王) yù ‘jade’ is said to combine three horizontal lines 三 representing multiple jade pieces/beads/gems, with a vertical line 丨 for the thread/string on which they are strung; formerly also wr. 𤣪(􀁣) with 八(􀋮) to distinguish it from 王(􀁞􀁟𠙻) wáng ‘king’.
    Note: In the modern independent form of the character 玉 only one extra dot 丶 distinguishes 玉 yù ‘jade’ from 王 wáng ‘king’; as a component (as in 理 lǐ …) 玉 is usually abbrev. to 王 (omitting the dot), and on the left side it is wr. 𤣩; but cf. 国, 宝 (which keep the dot); 王 in the lower position is not 玉 (cf. 呈, 望, 聖); in the upper position it is dotless in 弄(􀝙) nòng ‘play’ (cf. 玩).
