Note: The character 楚 is esp. assoc. with 牡荆 mǔjīng ‘Ch. chastetree (Vitex negundo var. cannabifolia)’ (cf. 荆), a tree/shrub (growing in dense thickets) with tough/pliable branches used to weave baskets and make whips; and hence words such as: 榜楚, 鞭楚, 捶楚, 棰楚; 棘楚.
