From Wenlin Dictionaries

1. 闲话 can be a verb:

  • 节目没有展示明星光环,不闲话明星生活,
  • 前一個晚上,眾人還圍在灶火旁飲著酒閒話家常,

2. The current definition ("digression; gossip; complaint") makes 闲话 sound rather negative, but its default meaning is quite innocuous. One dictionary definition is 隨意地談話。 [1] When it's something gossipy or otherwise negative, there are usually contextual clues – as in 在背後講閒話 or 閒話少說,多做正事.

Examples where 闲话 is not digression, gossip or complaint:

  • 以前大家習慣待在家裡製作年菜,和親友閒話平靜度過,people used to spend their Lunar New Year's Eve at home, preparing a meal and chatting quietly with friends
Proprietors simply don't have time for a leisurely ten-minute chat.
FDR's "fireside chats" comforted and cheered up who-knows-how-many Americans during wartime.
The previous night everyone had gathered by the stove drinking wine and chatting about everyday things,
  • 「當初媽媽是和鄰居討論說,既然有學琴,就去考考看,如果考上了就去念,」沒想到一句閒話竟然成真, "It started when my mother was talking to a neighbor. She said that since I'd already studied piano, I might as well take the entrance exam. If I passed, I could study music." They never imagined that what they so casually talked about would actually happen.
