From Wenlin Dictionaries

I don't think 首映 means "first-run movie". I don't think it's any sort of movie, but rather the screening of a movie — specifically, the first screening (the premiere).

As for ABC's gloss "first-time TV", that isn't very clear. It's presumably intended to mean "TV show shown for the first time". But I don't think it means that either. Again, it's the first screening of the show, not the show itself.

I think "first-run movie/TV" is wrong because I checked dictionaries and examples of usage.

No other dictionary that I checked says that 首映 is a first-run movie or TV show. Here is a sampling of definitions:

PLC ~ VERB be premiered; have a premiere; show for the first time

MOE ~ 第一場放映。如:「三十年代的回顧影展,今天在新公園首映。」

LAC ~ 第一次放映。例 「電影首映式」、「該片將於下週在臺首映」。

KEY ~ first showing (of a movie), premiere

NC ~ (动) (of a film) run for the first time; have its premiere; premiere

ABC (E-C) ~ premiere n.c./v. shọ̌uyǎn 首演; shǒuyìng 首映; shọ̌uzhǎn 首展

Based on examples of usage (see below), I propose the following definition:

1. (v.) to premiere (a movie); to show (a film or TV show) for the first time

2. (n.) premiere (of a movie, etc.)

3. (attr.) first-run

4. (v.) greet (the eye) before anything else (e.g. when entering a room)

I'm not sure how that should be formatted using band notation, but I did my best. In particular, the French definition "exclusivité (pour un film / une émission)" doesn't seem to correspond to any of the senses of 首映, but then again, my French is not that great. Certainly, exclusivité appears to be a noun, so I have aligned it with my sense #2. But can exclusivité mean "the first showing of a movie"? One dictionary defines exclusivité as "Caractère exclusif de quelque chose". That sounds like something different from a premiere.

Anyway, I hope you can tidy up the definition if I've gotten the formatting wrong.

Here are my examples of usage for each sense:

1. (v.) to premiere (a movie); to show (a film or TV show) for the first time

從《英雄》在大陸首映後,

Ever since Hero premiered in the mainland,

導演說,電影在香港首映、8位明星出席的盛會,香港媒體永遠只注意哪位明星的手和誰拉在一起等八卦,別說劇情,

The director said that when eight stars show up for a premiere in Hong Kong, the media coverage focuses only on gossip such as who is holding whose hand. Forget about the plot.

2. (n.) premiere (of a movie, etc.)

朱邦復在美國洛杉磯的中國戲院,看到電影《二○○一年太空漫遊》的首映,

Chu Bong-foo saw the premiere of 2001: A Space Odyssey at the Chinese Theater in Los Angeles,

3. (attr.) first-run

初期萬代福放映的都是好萊塢當紅的首映大片

Initially, the Wonderful showed only first-run Hollywood blockbusters,

4. (v.) greet (the eye) before anything else (e.g. when entering a room)

首映眼中是兩公尺多的巨大銅人,

The first thing that greets your eyes is a bronze statue over two meters tall,

首映眼簾的是黃志陽的《肖孝形產房》自天花板上垂下,

the first sight that greets visitors is a suite of free-hanging floor-to-ceiling scrolls by Huang Chih-yang, entitled "Maternity Room."

走進仙炙軒,一道溫潤光澤大理石螺旋樓梯首映眼前,與外圍希臘式愛奧尼克石柱,同樣讓人讚嘆。

The moment you enter Ambrosia, your eyes are immediately drawn to a magnificent stone spiral staircase surrounded by breathtaking Ionic stone pillars.
