The bottom (yuē) is (kǒu) ‘mouth’ with a horizontal line in it, representing the tongue, or sound coming out. The top may have depicted a flute; now it looks like (lì ‘stand’). The tops of 音 yīn ‘sound’ and yán ‘words’ were originally identical. 音 yīn and yán may be cognate.
