The left side is ​(​ sī) ‘thread’.
    In 绝 (and in the variant form ​) the right side looks like ​ sè ‘color’ with ​ (​) rén ‘man’ over ​/​/​ jié ‘seal’; but according to Shuōwén , the right side should be more like ​, which has ​󰀁 with ​ (​) dǎo ‘knife’ over ​/​/​ jié ‘seal’ phonetic. Note also the different stroke orders of ​/​󰀁.
    “Has nothing to do with ​, for the seal has: to ​ cut a ​ thread, signific, and ​ phonetic” —Karlgren(1923).
