(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 声:) The simple-form character 声 shēng ‘sound’ (7 strokes) is an old abbrev. of the full form 聲 (17 strokes), in which it is a component; 声(𡔝) is an old wr. of 磬(殸) qìng ‘stone chime’ (cf. 磬).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 聲() shēng ‘sound’ combines 耳 ěr ‘ear/hear’, and 磬() qìng ‘stone chime’ (abbrev. phonosemantic).
