(Explanation from the entry for the simple form ​:) The simple-form character ​ shēng ‘sound’ (7 strokes) is an old abbrev. of the full form 聲 (17 strokes), in which it is a component; ​(​𡔝) is an old wr. of ​(​􁦷􁦸) qìng ‘stone chime’ (cf. ​).
    The Shuōwén Seal form of 聲(​􂄂) shēng ‘sound’ combines ​ ěr ‘ear/hear’, and ​(​􁦷) qìng ‘stone chime’ (abbrev. phonosemantic).
