2 monosyllabic entries in The ABC Chinese-English Comprehensive Dictionary (namespace Ci):

¹shé {B} n. snake; serpent
²⁰yí char. ►³yíyí 蛇蛇 ►⁴wēiyí 委蛇

From (chóng) ‘worm’ and tā ‘it’.
depicted a cobra or python. The ancient sounds of 蛇 and (now shé and tā) were similar. Apparently when was borrowed to represent the word tā ‘other; he, she, it’, was added to , forming 蛇, to represent the original meaning ‘snake’.
