An area code is almost always 区号 or 区码. It's misleading to say 区位码 means "area code" because it's rarely, if ever, used in that sense – not least because 区位 means "location" rather than "area". GF defines 区位 as 地区位置.

区位码 is a row-cell code according to GF. That term is used in the following extract from Ken Lunde's book "CJKV Information Processing":
What Is Row-Cell? Row-Cell is the translated form of the Japanese word 区点 (kuten), which literally means “ward [and] point” (or, more intuitively, “row [and] cell”).* This idea serves as an encoding-independent method for referring to characters in CJKV character set standards. A Row-Cell code usually consists of four decimal digits—the “Row” portion consists of a two-digit number with a range from 1 to 94; likewise, the “Cell” portion also consists of a two-digit number with a range from 1 to 94. For example, the first character in most CJKV character set standards is 01-01 in Row-Cell notation, and is more often than not a “space” character.
