(Explanation from the entry for the simple form :) The simple-form character (9 strokes) is an abbrev. of a late variant of the full form 絕 (12 strokes), simplifying the left-side part to , but keeping the same right-side component as the variant form .
Note: In the simple form the right-side component looks like sè ‘color’ (as in the intermediary variant ), but is not a component of the full form 絕.
The full-form character 絕 follows older forms, preserving the old upper-right component dāo ‘knife’, which is not the top part of sè ‘color’.
Note: Simple form ← intermediary form ← full form 絕(􂐕); the simple form has the right-side shape (⿱𠂊) of the intermediary variant () form; the full form preserves the right-side components (⿱) of the Seal form.
The Shuōwén Seal form of /絕(􂐕) jué ‘cut off (silk ends/trimmings/thrum)’ combines / (sī) ‘silk/thread’, (􀯑𠚣) dāo ‘knife’ (cut), and (􁢭𢎛) jié ‘section/limit’ (phonosemantic); to cut/trim off the huì ‘thrums’ (in weaving, unwoven warp head/tail threads), when cutting the finished cloth from the loom; formerly wr. (􂐖𢇍).
Compare: (􁢽) sè ‘color’, in which the top component is 𠂊(􁕎) rén ‘person’, not (􀯑𠚣) dāo ‘knife’; cf. 𠂊/𠚣 (𠂊 usually corresp. to , not ; cf. ).
Compare: /(􀱥) jié ‘joint/section (of bamboo); section/limit’, in which (􁢭𢎛) jié ‘section/limit’ (phonosemantic).
Compare: /絕(􂐕􂐖𢇍) jué ‘cut off’; /(􂠖) duàn ‘sever, cut off’; (􂐘), /(􂐗𦇓) jì ‘continue’.
Compare: cuì ‘fragile/brittle’, formerly wr. (􀮷), with /絕(􂐕) jué (abbrev. phonosemantic), not (􁢽).
“[絕] Has nothing to do with , for the seal has: to cut a thread, signific, and phonetic” —Karlgren(1923).
Compare: Simple form (GB); PRC full form (HDZ/HDC); ROC full form 絕 (Big5); the stroke orders of /󰀁 differ as well, cf. .
