(Explanation from the entry for the simple form :) The simple-form character (7 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 應 (17 strokes), keeping the outer full-form part 广 (3 strokes), but replacing the inner parts with the shape (4 strokes).
Note: The simple form derives from old intermediary forms such as 𢇭, and (omitting ); the shape also occurs in unrelated simple forms: /, /, /.
The full-form character 應 is itself an abbrev. of older forms such as 𤻮 (19 strokes), replacing the old upper component 𤸰 (15 strokes) with a variant form (13 strokes).
Note: ← 𢇭 ← ← 應 ← 𤻮; the top of the full form 應 is the same as the top of /, and involves the same substitution of for 𤸰 in the older forms (see below).
The Shuōwén Seal form of /應(􁲋𤻮) yīng/yìng ‘should/answer’ combines (xīn) ‘heart/feeling’, and 𨿳(􀧎) yīng ‘hawk/falcon’ (phonosemantic): the falcon answers the falconer, replying with its cry and returning with its prey (as it ought).
Compare: /(􀧏𪇿𤼡) yīng ‘hawk/falcon’, formerly wr. 𨿳(􀧎), in which the component is (􁑘) yīn ‘hoarse voice/cry’ (phonosemantic).
