The simple-form character 强 (12 strokes) is an old variant of the full-form character (11 strokes), replacing the full-form component (2 strokes) with (3 strokes).
The character 强/ had very different old usage (see below), but was later used as an abbrev. of qiáng ‘strong’ (16 strokes); cf. .
The Shuōwén Seal form of 强/(􂕃) qiáng ‘weevil’ () combines ‘insect’, and (􂏕) hóng (phonetic); formerly wr. 𧖑(􂕄) with ‘insect’, and (􂏑) qiáng (phonetic).
Note: Formerly 强 qiáng‘weevil’, lost in modern usage; cf. (􂏑) qiáng ‘strong (bow)’, later wr. 强/.
“The character originally meant ‘the larva of the corn-weevil’ and was applied, as abbreviation for , to the homophonous word ‘strong’...” —Karlgren(AD).
Note: The full form (with rather than ) has one stroke less than 强, but strangely 强 is the “simple” form because it is in the simple form GB standard, while is in the full form Big5 standard; this is one of those absurd situations where the “simple” form has more strokes than the “full” form.
