The simple-form character 离 (10 strokes) is today mainly used as an abbrev. of the full-form character 離 lí ‘leave’ (18 strokes), conflating two old characters formerly distinguished as 离 chī ‘mountain spirit’ (魑/螭), vs. 離 lí ‘oriole’ (黄鹂); both forms (simple 离 and full 離) have long been used for 离/離 lí ‘leave’, and also for the trigram/hexagram name (☲/䷝).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 离(𡼁) chī ‘mountain-forest spirit/animal’ is said to combine 禽() qín ‘bird’ (abbrev.), with 屮() chè ‘sprout/crest’ (phonosemantic); later wr. 魑/螭(), as in 魑魅魍魉 chīmèi-wǎngliǎng ‘demons and monsters’.
Note: In 离 chī, the component 禽 is abbrev., replacing top part 今 jīn (phonetic) with 屮 chè (phonetic); the head of 禽(⿳今凶禸) is wr. 凶, and the body 禸.
Compare: 凶() xiōng ‘terrible/disastrous’ (cf. 龟); 禸(𠫗𠘯厹) róu ‘animal tracks, hind quarters’.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 離() lí ‘oriole’ combines 隹() zhūi ‘short-tailed bird’, and 离(𡼁) chī/lí (phonosemantic); formerly also wr. 鵹/𨿯(𩁟), and later 鹂/鸝 (黄鹂).
Note: 黄鹂, 黄莺, 仓庚/鶊 ‘black-naped oriole (Oriolus chinensis)’.
Note: Both forms 离/離 are old wr. of the trigram/hexagram name (☲/䷝), but 离 is older; the structure of the character 离(𡼁) mirrors that of the hexagram ䷝ (☲ doubled), with 㐫(凶) above for the upper trigram ☲, and 禸(𠫗) below for the lower trigram ☲; the trigram ☲ itself is open in the middle, with a ⚋ (㐅) line (爻) separating the upper and lower ⚊ lines; and hence the meanings ‘open/clear (bright/light/fire); separate/leave’; cf. 五.

Older graphs associated with 离 are sometimes said to depict a bird (top two strokes 亠) being caught in a 网 net (still recognizable by the 㐅 crossing strokes; cf. 毕/畢 bì).
