From Wenlin Dictionaries

Current entry: wúnài* 无奈[無-] {E} f.e. helpless; without choice ◆adv. unfortunately ◆conj. but; however

Regarding "◆adv. unfortunately":

无奈 is a conjunction. Not an adverb (as in "The year ended unfortunately.") Also, 无奈 can't express "but; however" if the following clause expresses a fortunate situation, as in "He fell over, but he was uninjured." The following clause has to express a negative reality, as in 今年產能擴充百分之百,無奈營業額只成長四成左右。

Also, why is 无奈 regarded as a "f.e." when it's used like a stative verb (e.g. 這種指控特別令人無奈。) yet it's labeled a "conj." when it links two clauses? Richwarm (talk) 23:08, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
