Regarding the sense glossed as "in a certain amount", here is what some other sources say:

PLC: so much; so many : 枉费如许工力 | have wasted so much labour

MOE: 若干、有些。如:「如许钱」。

GF: 这么些; 这么多 | 破费如许钱财。

鲁迅《故乡》: 海边有如许五色的贝壳;

Grand Ricci: Tant de; telle quantité de.

I think "in a certain amount" does not express the meaning very well, and that "so much; so many" would be much better.
