<WL>昼(F晝) [zhòu] day, daytime (白昼); 昼夜 day and night; 昼分 high noon
The bottom, 旦 dàn ‘dawn’, indicates the meaning (日 sun over 一 horizon). The upper part is 聿 () in the full form 晝, reduced to 尺 (chǐ) in the simple form 昼. Wieger says during the day “it is 日 clear enough to 聿 write”, while Karlgren says “interpretation of the upper part uncertain”.

The simple-form character 昼 (9 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 晝 (11 strokes), replacing the upper full-form component 聿 (6 strokes) with a shape like 尺 (4 strokes).
Note the similarity between 昼() zhòu and 画() huà in their full forms, the only difference being that has 田 where 晝 has 日.

Note: In the simple form 昼 use of the component 尺 for 聿 is as in the simple form 尽, cf. 尽/盡.

The full-form character 晝 (11 strokes) is an abbrev. of old forms such as 𦘙 (12 strokes) and 𦘘 (12 strokes); formerly wr. like 𤲿 (the old form of 画/畫), replacing 田 with 日.

The Shuōwén Seal form of /晝(􀡍𦘙) zhòu ‘day/daytime (from sunrise to sunset); noon/midday’ combines /畫(􀡊𤲿􀡋𤱪􀡌𠞷) huà ‘draw boundary lines’ (abbrev.), and 日(􁈏) rì ‘sun/day’ (as in 时); the night marks the boundaries of the day (sunrise to sunset); formerly wr. 𦘘(􀡎), with 𤱪(􀡋) old form of 画/(􀡊𤲿).

Compare: 尽/盡(􀶥䀆) jìn ‘use up; exhaust’.
