The simple-form character 书 (4 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 書 (10 strokes), in three steps: ⑴ replace the upper full-form component 聿 (6 strokes) with its first and last strokes (hz,s); ⑵ replace the lower full-form component 日 (6 strokes) with its second stroke 𠃍 (hz) slightly changed to 𠃌 (hzg) by adding a trailing hook; ⑶ add a stroke 丶 (d) at upper right (distinguishing 书 from the similar simple form 韦).
The simple-form character 书 (4 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 書 (10 strokes), replacing the upper full-form component 聿 (6 strokes) with an abbrev. of 帇 (old variant of 𦘒 in 聿), and omitting the lower full-form part 日 (4 strokes).
Note: The simple form 书 reflects old cursive (草书) writing traditions; the PRC stroke order of 书 (hz,hzg,s,d) differs from the above description (hz,s,hzg,d), since the (s) stroke is 3rd (not 2nd).
Note: The simple form 书 reflects old cursive (草书) writing traditions, as in 韦/韋; in PRC stroke order 书 (hz,hzg,s,d) the vertical stroke 丨 (s) is 3rd, and the dot 丶 (d) at upper right is added last (clearly distinguishing 书 from the similar simple form 韦); cf. 韦/韋.
The full-form character 書 (10 strokes) is itself an abbrev. of more complex old forms such as 𦘠 (15 strokes), replacing the old component 者 (8-9 strokes) with its lower part 日 (4 strokes).
