Older graphs associated with 臣 are thought to depict an eye/head turned sideways (rotated 90 degrees); Karlgren (GSR:241,377) compares 臣 with old forms of 見 jiàn ‘see’ in which 目 ‘eye’ (or 首 ‘hairy head with eye’) is 罒 horizontal; old forms of 見(􁝪) have the horizontal eye-slit, but the arms and legs of the human body are seen in profile: bending the body at the waist turns that eye vertically (and the body is not drawn).
