The Shuōwén Seal form of 凝(􁾽) níng ‘freeze’ combines 冫(􁾻仌) bīng ‘ice’ (phonosemantic), and 疑(􂥟) yí/níng ‘uncertain/slippery/congeal’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 冰(􁾼𣲝) níng ‘freeze’, vs. 仌(􁾻) bīng ‘ice’.

Note: Today distinguished as 凝 níng ‘freeze’, vs. 冰 bīng ‘ice’, but the historical development is complex; Shuōwén 凝 níng ‘freeze’ is a variant of 冰(􁾼𣲝) níng ‘freeze’; the old graph 仌(􁾻) bīng ‘ice’ (today as a left-side comp. wr. 冫) is said to depict ice crystals; the augmented form 冰 (with 水 water on the right) was invented to specify 冰(􁾼𣲝) níng ‘freeze’, but later that form replaced 仌(􁾻) bīng ‘ice’, and the form 凝 níng ‘freeze’ was invented for that reading; perhaps bīng ‘ice’ (← OC pʲəŋ) and níng ‘freeze’ (← OC ŋʲəŋ) are cognates, once differentiated by (causal) prefix morphology.
