The Shuōwén Seal form of 皁/皂(􁈔𣅼早) zào ‘acorn’ is an abbrev. of 𦯑(􀋞𦷣草) zào ‘acorn’, commonly wr. 皂 to distinguish it from 早 and 草 cǎo ‘grass’.

Note: The top component 白 in this character is sometimes said to depict an ‘acorn’, as in 樂(􀽞櫟) ‘oak tree’; the acorn husk was a source of black dye, and tannic acid for tanning hides; in the expression 青红皂白 ‘all the colors of the rainbow’ the character 皂/皁 ‘black’ has the old meaning; if the character/component 白 derives from ‘black’ usage in 樂, why it should have been used for ‘white’ “is not clear” (cf. EDOC: 白 bái₁; 以白为黑); in SW 白 is said to be the color of the west (setting sun); cf. 白, 泊, 迫.
