The Shuōwén Seal form of 甲(􂤬􂤭𠇚) jiǎ ‘sprouting seed/acorn’ (天干) is said to depict a tree seed (acorn, oak nut; as seen in profile) sprouting up in the first lunar month, putting down a 丅(􀀏) root as at the bottom of 本(􀾀), and carrying up with it the 冖(􁒧𠘨􁎝宀) leathery shell (acorn cap, scaled cupule, with sharp stem/tip above) as it emerges from the soil; and by extension ‘shell; skull (髑髅)’.
