The modern form 牦 seems to be an abbrev. of 犛 (omitting 𠩺 entirely, which had lost its phonetic value), and adding combining 毛 máo (as in 氂) to replace the phonetic (now phonosemantic). Yak fiber/wool had many traditional uses, and it seems that the animal and its derived products were conflated in trade with people who never saw the animals, but only the tails/wool/rope/etc.
