 The simple-form character 坛 tán ‘jar/jug’ is an abbrev. of a variant 壜 of the full-form character 罈 tán ‘jar/jug’, replacing the variant component 曇 (16 strokes) with its lower part 云 (4 strokes); 坛 is also used as the simple form of the full-form character 壇 tán ‘altar’ (see below).
-	Note: In the simple form 坛, the right-side part 云 (yún ‘cloud’) is short for 曇 tán (abbrev. phonetic) in the variant full forms 壜/罎; the character 曇 tán ‘cloudy’ usually simplifies to 昙, but in this case as component it becomes 云; the variant form 𬎬 (not in common use) has the expected component 昙.
