The character 祝 zhù ‘express good wishes’ seems to have 礻(示 shì) ‘heavens/rites’ on the left, and 兄 (xiōng) ‘elder brother’ on the right, but the old explanations are different.
The character 祝 zhù ‘express good wishes’ seems to have 礻(示 shì) on the left (as in 福 ‘bless’), and 兄 (xiōng) on the right, but 兄 here is an old wr. of 兑/兌 (see below).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 祝(􀀽) zhù ‘shaman/warlock/priest’ is said to combine 礻(示 shì) ‘heavens/rites’ and 兑(􁝖兌) yuè ‘joy’ (悦) (abbrev. to 兄).
Note: Today mainly 祝 zhù (v.) ‘bless, invoke blessings, express good wishes’, but formerly 祝 zhù (n.) ‘priest; shaman/warlock/diviner’.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 祝(􀀽) zhù ‘(male) priest (offering sacrifices); shaman/warlock/diviner’ (太祝, 巫祝) is said to combine 礻(示 shì) ‘heavens/rites’ (as in 祭祀 ‘offer ritual sacrifice’), and a shape like 兄, which stands for /兌(􁝖) duì/yuè ‘ecstatic/happy/joyous’ (abbrev.); the shaman offers ecstatic ritual sacrifice in order to divine/interpret the will of nature, to placate the gods/spirits, and achieve divine blessing/happiness for the people (幸福, 祝福).
Note: The abbrev. component 兑/兌(􁝖) duì/yuè ‘happy/joyous/ecstatic’ (later wr. /說), is trad. assoc. with (易) divination, the n-grams ☱䷹ 兑 Duì, 口(􀌼𠙵) kǒu ‘(smiling) mouth’ (oral/spoken/sung) prayers/chants/songs/spells/invocations, and 巫 wū ‘witch/sorceress; sorcery/divination/magic’.
Compare: 咒 zhòu ‘curse’ (咒骂), which is a later wr. of 呪/詋, 祝(􀀽), 詶(􀚷).
Compare: 柷(􁁠) zhù ‘musical percussion instrument’, in which 祝(􀀽) zhù (abbrev. phonosemantic), formerly also wr. 拀/祝 (HDZ).
Older graphs associated with 祝 are thought to have 兄 or 若 ‘kneeling person with hands up-raised’ (HDZ).
