Note: The full-form character 醜 is always replaced by 丑 in simplified texts, but among full-form characters 丑 and 醜 are distinct; 丑 only becomes 醜 when the meaning is ‘ugly’; 丑 was traditionally used to write ‘clown/buffoon’ (opera roles: 丑角, 丑旦, 丑婆子, 生旦净丑, 生旦净末丑, 文丑, 武丑), and from this it was generalized to write the homophone 醜 chǒu ‘ugly’ (丑 and 醜 were not homophones in MC/OC); some full-form ‘clown’ words may be wr. with 醜 today (apparently only the ugliest of clowns).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 丑(􂥬) chǒu (2nd of the anc. Earthly Branches) is said to depict a 又(􀠋) yòu ‘(right) hand’ (右) with the fingers bound together (their will to move is thwarted); this explanation relates to the character 纽(􂒈紐) niǔ ‘tie (a slip-knot, which can be easily untied)’, in which 丑 (phonosemantic).

Older graphs associated with 丑 seem to depict a 爪(􀟲) zhǎo ‘claw’, modified later to distinguish the calendrical (地支) usage; the origins were already obscure in E. Hàn times (cf. 天干地支).
